Cornelian Cherry, Red Star
Dark red oval fruits 1¼" long. Zones: 4-8. Ht: 12-15'. PP
Cornelian cherries are actually dogwoods, grown for their delicate yellow flowers in early spring, yellow and red fall color, and bright red or yellow fruits. The Ukrainian selections we offer are prized for their large, sweet-tart, juicy fruits, which are delicious fresh or used in baked goods, preserves, juice, and wine. Vitamin C content is about twice that of oranges. Fruit softens when ripe, usually in late August. Bears 2-3 years after planting.
Though somewhat self-fertile, planting two varieties ensures bigger crops. Plant with either Elegant™ or Yellow™.
