Watermelon

Watermelons should be planted out after danger of frost is past. Soil temperatures below 60° inhibit germination. Plant in hills or mounds of organically enriched soil. Space hills 4-6 feet apart. Use Hot Kaps or other plant protection the first few weeks. In short season areas, start seed indoors in peat pots or Super -Size Jiffy-7® Plant starters. Days to maturity indicate the average time from setting out plants to first ripe fruit, not from direct sowing seed.
