Pretty good

This was my first time growing any type of popcorn. The plants grew nearly 8' tall, and I never thought I was going to get any ears, but they did finally form. I got one to two ears on all the stalks. Most were well pollinated. I just tried air popping an ear I picked a few weeks ago, and it popped! The kernels exploded much stronger than store bought popcorn. The kernels popped large and fluffy, but only a few have that "mushroom" look. I've heard that it is hard to obtain this, and that it's mostly popping temperature related. I searched online for the trick, but haven't found it yet....

I planted puffy pop popcorn, robust yellow and robust white this year. All three were planted in the same garden with the same history in the area before them. Pollination on the yellow and white was good. Pollination on the puffy pop was marginal with many of the ears having blank spots. The puffy pop seemed to be very susceptible to smut, while there were no plants with smut in the robust yellow or white. The puffy pop does pop up much larger than the other two but is rather tough compared to them. I will not be planting puffy pop again
