Long-lived, hardy vegetables
One of the earliest producing vegetable crops, these long-lived hardy perennials can produce for 30 years or more. Its young shoots, called spears, are harvested in spring and eaten steamed, boiled, roasted, or in soups. Asparagus has separate male and female plants, but high-yielding all male selections are also available. It is recommended that an Asparagus loving family plants at least 10 plants per person to have plenty to enjoy.
