Blueberry like fruits ripen before strawberries. Withstanding temperatures to -40F the bushes display small, white slightly fragrant flowers in March followed by fruits similar in color and flavor to large blueberries, ripening about two weeks before strawberries. Easy to grow with few pest or disease problems. Prefers partial shade where summers are hot, but plants are happy in full sun in northern states. Not self-fertile so plant 2 varieties if fruit is desired. Bears 2 to 3 years after planting. The following cultivars bred by the University of Saskatchewan were chosen for their large, firm fruit with superb flavor and fast rate of growth. Plants quickly grow 3-5' tall.
