The lily of ancient Greece. Each 2 to 5 foot stem holds 8 to 15 funnel-shaped, pure white blooms. Plant in late summer or fall with no more than an inch of soil covering the bulb. Unlike other Lilies, for best blooming Madonna Lily (Lilium candidum) should only be planted 1 inch deep to the top of the bulb. A rosette of foliage appears soon after planting. Blooms in early June. Mulch in colder climates to prevent bulbs from heaving.
