Cucumber

For an early crop and to protect roots that don't like to be disturbed; Start seeds indoors in Jiffy-7's or peat pots 3 to 4 weeks prior to outdoor planting. Set plants out after danger of frost is past. Seeds sown directly should be planted when the soil warms up to 60°F. Plant 5 to 6 seeds in hills 4 to 5 feet apart, thinning to 3 plants. To save space and get straight cucumbers, grow vining types on a fence, netting, or trellis. Approximately 1000 seeds per ounce.

Other Cultural Notes:
For about the first week to 10 days cucumber plants will only produce male flowers. Watch for the transition to production of female flowers, avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen as this can delay or halt female flower production. Cucumber plants are heat loving but require well-drained, organically rich soil in a sunny location, with consistent watering of at least 1 inch per week to keep plants producing well. Proper pollination is critical for fruit quality, size and flavor.
